more about Ayurveda
The philosophy
of Ayurveda is rooted in the belief that the Universe consists of five elements,
namely:
Space
Air
Fire
Water and
Earth.
Each object within the Universe is unique, as each has its own
ratio of the 5 elements. It is this differing ratio of the elements that creates
the rich diversity of our surroundings.
From the five elements evolved
the idea of Dosas, which are forces or energies
within our human bodies. The balance of Dosas within us is very important. When
in balance, Dosas take care of all our bodily functions. When out of balance,
they cause ill-health.
There are three Dosas:
Vata that is a combination of air and space
Pitta combining fire and water, and
Kapha with earth and water.
The Dosas are dynamic and influence both
our physical and mental well-being.
Vata
takes care of all movement and transportation within the body. It is the master
Dosa within the body; imbalance of Vata causes the greatest number of ailments.
Pitta, with its fiery property, is responsible
for digestion and metabolism, even at the cellular level.
Kapha
provides stability and bodily frame; it controls all fluids and lubricates the
joints. As it gives stamina and health, an imbalance of Kapha creates the fewest
number of ailments.
As for qualities of mind,
Vata is responsible for ideas and changes
Pitta for setting goals, intelligence and bravery and
Kapha for grounding, stability and perseverance.
The aim of Ayurvedic
treatment is to bring the aggravated Dosas back to balance using diet, herbal
medicines, specific body treatments and yoga.
